How We Help Young Leaders
MissionCars is a business project of Alpha Academy, a residential mentoring program in San Luis Obispo, CA. Alpha Academy students are young men who are serious about pursuing positive direction in their lives, and commit to six months of work, class, and community to reach their goals.
Although Alpha Academy is a 501(c)3 non-profit ministry, one of its priorities is to earn its operating expenses through small businesses. These business projects provide a real-world environment in which students can learn planning, budgeting, follow-through, attention to detail, work ethic, and many other life lessons. Rather than limit learning to the classroom, Alpha Academy take advantage of the powerful lessons built into real-world businesses.
Through MissionCars, students are able to learn basic vehicle maintenance, decision-making, advertising, marketing and communication skills, while gaining firsthand knowledge of small business.
How We Help Other Non-Profits
Mark and Christian present a check to the United Way
It’s not just Alpha Academy that benefits from Mission Cars. A portion of every Mission Cars sale is given to another non-profit designated by the donor. One Mission Cars partner, K-LIFE/890 Christian radio, simply told their supporters about Mission Cars as a support option. In the last year, Mission Cars has been able to donate over $5,000 to K-LIFE!
We recently sold a Honda Accord donated to Mission Cars, and were able to present a check to United Way of San Luis Obispo County! This was truly a win for everyone involved: the customer got a great value on a quality car, Mission Cars was able to support United Way AND Alpha Academy, and the donor was able to take a tax deduction!
In addition, the proceeds from this donation stayed in San Luis Obispo County, benefiting our neighbors.
