Frequently Asked Questions

Is it worth it to donate a car?

Donating a car is a great option for both you and your community. It provides another way to support a charity whose work you believe in. You get the car taken off your hands and avoid the hassles of selling the car yourself. All vehicle donations are 100% tax-deductible.

What is the best organization to donate a car to?

The organization must be a qualified charity recognized by the IRS as a 501(c)(3). It is recommended you choose an organization you are able to keep in touch with. In order to justify the deductions you claim on your tax return, the donor is responsible for following up with the organization to determine how the vehicle was used. As a local nonprofit, we are more than happy to assist with this process.

How do I donate a used car?

The easiest way to donate a car is to contact us to pick up your vehicle or arrange a time and place to meet. You will be given a written receipt of your donation. The charity will either give you a written acknowledgment or Form 1098-C. The documentation should include your name, the vehicle identification number, the date of your donation, and a statement describing the goods and services. For more information, view the IRS donor's guide to vehicle donation.

How much do you get for donating a car?

The deduction is determined by the exact amount the car actually garnered for the charity, which is documented by a receipt from the charity to the donor. The amount you can claim still depends on the vehicle's fair market value and how the charity ends up using it. However, for cars selling for less than $500, IRS regulations allow for a deduction of $500 or the car’s fair market value, whichever is less.

At Mission Cars, all vehicles are donated to sell for money. Donors can deduct the final selling price. The charity will provide you with the final selling price through a written acknowledgment or Form 1098-C.
